Textile

To use less energy and save money, today we tend to reduce the amount of laundry and wash it at low temperature. But laundry washed at 30°C would contain only 10 times less micro-organisms than before washing, as opposed to 500 times less when washing at 40°C (source Institut Pasteur). Microbial risks and bad smells caused by bacterial fermentation also persist. The surviving micro-organisms will then be able to multiply in the machine drum, and will be ready to settle on any dry or wet textiles that come into contact with them.

Microbes also nest easily in textile fibres. A single piece of cloth can contain more than 1,000,005 germs per square centimetre after being worn for one day. But some cloths become more contaminated with germs than others.
