Although we do not see it, refrigerators can be highly contaminated due to the bacteria in raw food. The most common are listeria, pseudomonas aeruginosa or enterobacteriaceae, which are common in 5% of fridges.
We might also have fungus in compartments and rubbers, so it is very important to keep the fridge always clean and disinfected (clean it at least every 3 months) to reduce the presence of these bacteria and prevent them from passing into food, and from this into our body. This habit will also reduce the bad smells.
8 steps to clean the fridge
- Disconnect the fridge from the mains. We will have to clean it with the doors open, since if we do it with the refrigerator turned on it will suppose an unnecessary excess of energy consumption.
- Remove the food. Clean and disinfect when you have little food in the fridge. Empty the contents of the fridge so that you can work better on the entire surface without contact with food.
- Remove the shelves. Remove all the elements that are removable from inside the fridge to get better access to each corner.
- Use Multi-Purpose Disinfectant – Eucalyptus directly on the walls of the fridge. It is important to reach each corner of the fridge, and also to apply it to the door and the rubbers. Spread it with a clean, damp cloth, leave it to work for 15 minutes and then rinse it. This product disinfects without bleach, so it is perfect for surfaces that will be in contact with food.
- Also apply the Multi-Purpouse Disinfectant Kitchen on the shelves, repeating the same process. Make sure there are no product residues by rinsing it with a clean damp cloth or under running water under the tap.
- Wash the door seals. Do not forget to clean the refrigerator door seals properly, as this is where the most dirt accumulates and fungi can also form with the damp. Clean it thoroughly, using a toothbrush to access the most difficult corners if necessary.
- Clean the outside. Our fridge should not be clean only on the inside, but also on the outside. Also disinfect the handle or the area where it opens. It is very important that you clean the back of the refrigerator well, since an excess of dirt in this part can damage the appliance and impair its operation.
- Fit the shelves. Once you have completely disinfected your fridge, you can replace the shelves and relocate the food.
With these simple steps you will know how to clean your fridge and you can keep it clean and disinfected, thus protecting your food from the micro-organisms that can appear in it.
